Prior to applying to dietetic internships, I gained extensive clinical experience in the field, from regular hospital volunteering, to working as a dietetic assistant, to taking Medical Nutrition Therapy coursework. I became familiar with the Nutrition Care Process and ADIME charting, medical terminology, anthropometrics, hospital diet orders, and patient database and software programs. I have also shadowed and completed numerous projects alongside clinical RDs.

In addition to reviewing and synthesizing research and writing papers, I am skilled with conducting literature searches for utilizing research in evidence-based practice. In my volunteer work, I have performed numerous literature searches to assist with establishing hospital protocols (i.e. for stoss therapy,  height prediction from ulna length, refugee nutrition, stunting interventions, pediatric palliative care, and health care service.) Using evidence-based research, I have also been a contributing writer for hospital publications and assisted the Krauss research group at CHORI with projects for current and future studies on dietary effects on heart health.

As part of my Food Systems Organization & Management course during my DPD program at UC Berkeley, I created a K-5 monthly cycle menu in adherence to the food-based regulations of the National School Lunch Program meal pattern and Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act guidelines. Using the USDA National Nutrient Database, I conducted nutrient analysis on all menu items to ensure that they were within allowed ranges for calories, sodium, and saturated fat. Considerations were made to ensure menu choices were kid-friendly, seasonal, sustainable, and culturally sensitive.

As part of my Food Systems Organization & Management course in my DPD program at UC Berkeley, my team and I worked with Marcos Hernandez, Cal Dining executive chef, in order to re-envision a dish served in the dining halls to be more plant forward. We created the grilled potatoes with Moroccan charmoula sauce pictured, a bright, flavorful, satisfying dish.

I see strong parallels in the way that a journalist must translate reliably sourced information to the public, and a dietitian must do the same with evidence-based research. In addition to working as a clinical RD, I plan to utilize my strong journalism background in news and health writing and editing along with my nutrition science background to contribute to nutrition publications and research. Running the SMC campus newspaper as editor-in-chief also afforded me leadership skills that are valuable as an RD.
